The Problem

The homeowner called us for fire and smoke damage cleanup after a small cooktop fire spread smoke and soot throughout their fourth-floor residence in a high-rise building in Lincoln Park.

The fire was extinguished quickly in the kitchen sink, limiting the direct fire damage. However, heat from the fire damaged and melted the plastic covers on the upper kitchen cabinets.

The larger problem was smoke and soot. Even though the fire itself stayed small, smoke spread beyond the kitchen and left soot residue on ceilings, walls, floors, and contents throughout the unit.

When we arrived, we found fire and smoke damage in several areas of the unit:

The kitchen, including the cooktop area, upper cabinet covers, ceilings, and walls
The dining room, including walls, ceilings, floors, and contents
The master bedroom, including the ceiling, walls, floors, and contents
The bathroom, including ceilings, walls, floors, and surfaces

The Solution

Removed the damaged cabinet covers from the upper kitchen cabinets so our crew could access and clean the affected surfaces
Cleaned smoke and soot from the kitchen, addressing the area where the fire started as well as contamination on surrounding ceilings and walls
Cleaned the dining room from top to bottom, including the ceiling, walls, floors, and contents affected by smoke
Cleaned the master bedroom in stages, starting with the ceiling before moving on to the walls, floors, and contents
Cleaned the bathroom, addressing smoke and soot that had spread beyond the kitchen
Worked through the entire residence, rather than limiting the cleaning to the cooktop area where the fire originated

Because smoke spread throughout the unit, our crew cleaned the entire residence instead of focusing only on the kitchen where the fire started.

The Timeline

On 7/28, set up air scrubbers with HEPA filters and hydroxyls to begin to rid the home of smoke odors
On 8/4, began fire and smoke cleaning on the fourth floor, starting in the kitchen where the cooktop fire started
Identified heat damage to the plastic covers on the upper cabinets in the kitchen
Removed the affected cabinet covers to provide access for cleaning
Cleaned smoke and soot from the kitchen ceilings, walls, and surrounding surfaces
Cleaned the dining room walls, ceilings, floors, and contents
Completed cleaning in the bathroom
On 8/5, began cleaning the master bedroom ceiling, with the walls, floors, and contents scheduled next
Finished working through the remaining affected areas and completed the fire and smoke cleaning that day

Although I left the heat on 70 and exposed as many pipes to heat as I could, my heater decided to malfunction at some point.  I received an alert on my app that the heat was off but I was already flying home and did not expect anything to freeze. This is not what you want to come home to at 8pm at night.  The only one that answered the phone and was able to come out that night was servicemaster. We went over the process of water damage remediation, insurance and how to manage the chaos. The repairs took a while to get on schedule but mainly because our insurance adjuster dragged his feet, I was really happy that servicemaster advocated on our behalf to get everything covered on the repairs, the insurance adjuster didn't want to pay for anything.
